Democracy

A. Read the text and answer the questions?

The word democracy comes from the Greek works demos people and kratos-rule, strength. Democracy has its beginning in certain city-states of Greece, in which the whole citizen body formed the legislature. Such a system was possible at that time-more than two millennia ago because a city state rarely exceeded 10.000 peopl, and women and slaves had no political right.

Citizen were eligible for a variety of executive and judicial offices, some of which were filled by elections, while others were assigned by lot. The Greek democracy had little direct influence on the development of modern democratic practices, the constitutional democracy as we know it now.
