1. Simple Present

A. Form

+ I/You/We/They work
He/She/It works
I/You/We/They do not (don’t) work
He/She/It does not (doesn’t) works

B. Spelling rules

  • For he, she and it, we add s with most verb

She comes from Indonesia

The job pays good salary

  • When the verb ends with a consonant + y, the ending becomes –ies :

He often flies to Australia

  • When the verb end in –ch, -sh, -x, or –z, the ending becomes –es :

He finishes everyday at 6.pm

She faxes the invoices to us

C. We use the present simple

  • To talk about the habits and work routines

I get up early in the morning

She goes to school by bus

The sales representatives arrive at 8.30 and we open at 9 o’clock.

  • To talk about the facts and things that generally

They have some new cars

The director earns high salary

  • With verbs that describe permanent situations :

The computer company sells its products all over the world

  • To talk about programs and timetable

There are two flights to Manado next Monday. There is a Garuda flight that leaves Jakarta at 8.45 am and there is Sriwijaya flight that departs at 7 pm.

  • With adverbs expressing of frequency

I usually go the office at 7 am

D. Adverbs and Expressions of frequency

–         For emphasis : usually, generally, often and sometimes can go at beginning of a sentence.

Sometimes I don’t like my work

Generally we take our students for a trip

–         Expression of frequency can go at the beginning or the end of a sentence but not in the middle

Once a year we have a sales conference

We have a sales conference once a year

2. PRESENT CONTINUOUS

+ I am working
you are/we are/they are
He/She/It is
I am not Working
You/We/they are not
He/She/It is not
? Am I working?
Are you/we/they
Is he/she/it

A. Short Answer :

Yes, I am                                 No, I’m not

Yes, he/she/it is             No, he/she/it isn’t

Yes, you/we/they are                No, you/we/they aren’t

B. Spelling rules

–   Most verbs add-ing

She’s talking to her mother

–   For verbs ending in “e”, take away “e” and add –ing :

He’s making some plans

–   For verbs ending in consonant + vowel + consonant double the consonant and add-ing

Is anyone sitting here?

C. We use the present continuous :

–         To talk about actions in progress at the time of speaking

I’m using your computer at the moment

Not now, I am taking a computer program

–         For actions and current projects that are not necessarily in progress at the time speaking but have not finished :

I am still writing the report

At the moment we are building a new estate with 200 houses

–         For temporary situation

We are staying at the Sheraton Hotel for the next few days
