2. PAST SIMPLE

A. Form of the Verb in the Simple Past Tense

    1. Regular Verbs


Verb Ending Example
Ends in a consonant + ed I worked at the office
(e.g. work)
Ends in –e (e.g. decide) + d He decided t take a taxi
Ends with a consonant + vowel + consonant (e.g. stop) Double the final consonant + ed He stopped smoking two years ago
Ends in a consonant + y (e.g. study Change y to ied He studied civic at UNESA Surabaya
    2. Irregular verbs

Many frequently used verbs are irregular :

Buy – bought cost – cost know – knew write – wrote

Make – made meet – met send – sent

    B. We use the simple past to talk about :
    – A completed single action in the past

We gave them a lot of money

Mrs. Tuty made a cake in the kitchen

    – A past state that is now finished

I met him yesterday

They played football in the yard

    – A repeated action in the past

We went to Jakarta last Sunday

The Secretary always wrote a letter to her boss

    C. Past time references

We use the simple past tense with expression that refer to a definite moments or period in the past.

+ century In the 20th century
on+ day/date On 21st January

He first set up in business in 2004

The 1980s were relatively prosperous

We signed the contract on 3rd April 2005

Other expression used in the simple past tense are last……, yesterday,…..ago

They had a meeting last week

He visited the factory yesterday

She left the company five years ago

    D. Negative statement

To make a negative statement about the past we use did not/didn’t + infinitive without to

She saw you yesterday She did not see you yesterday
They worked hard They did not work hard
    E. Question forms

We make a questions about the past with did/didn’t + subject + infinitive without to

Did you go to office by car? Yes, I did / No, I didn’t

Did she see you yesterday? Yes, she did / No, she didn’t

Did they work hard? Yes, they did / No, they didn’t
